Blog Scrubbers for fumes and gases: how to reduce water-soluble substances and odors

Abatement of water-soluble substances and bad odors present in the working environment is now possible thanks to water scrubbers for fumes and gases. These are specific types of purification systems, developed and designed to eliminate volatile organic compounds, specifically those of an organic or inorganic chemical nature that are soluble in water.

The washing towers exploit an inlet placed in the lower part to introduce the fumes that gradually, going up inside the depuration cylinder, are attacked by nebulized liquids chosen according to the pollutant to be abated. These will capture inside the drops the substances considered harmful, releasing then the air purified and free of odors.

Types of scrubbers for the abatement of volatile organic compounds

There are different types of scrubbers designed to best suit different needs. The configurations are studied according to the space available for the installation, as well as to the type and quantity of pollutants to be abated.
However, it is possible to go and identify some main types of scrubbers, such as:

  • Vertical scrubbers, also known as scrubbing towers, and equipped with classical wet abatement for the removal of water-soluble chemical compounds. The dimensioning parameters of these plants are calculated according to the flow rates, the temperatures, the pollutants and the relative concentration. In particular, Venturi scrubbers are used for powders, which exploit the pressure in the Venturi throat to push the pollutant substances into the washing liquid. This system is extremely effective in the presence of volatile organic compounds. In addition, the washing of fumes can also occur through several scrubber towers arranged in series or superimposed.
  • Floating scrubbers, are distinguished by having a fluidized bed inside them and not static as the vertical scrubbers. Characterized by a configuration that allows to have reduced diameters of the tower and reduced footprint on the ground, then increasing its capacity in height.
  • Horizontal scrubbers, designed for those areas where there is no possibility to develop plants in height. The operating mechanism is the same as the vertical scrubbers, with the only difference that the washing stages are developed in length and not in height.

All types of scrubbers ensure excellent performance by returning air flows cleaned, purified, free of pollutants and almost odorless.
